Canary Islands

From the port of Cadiz, Pietro Querini continued his voyage to Flanders, but headwinds pushed him toward the Canary Islands.

From Pietro Querini’s diary (P.Nelli, 2007):It was July 14, and we left the port of Cadiz to continue our journey. It was foreseeable that enemy ships would come in from the west, and to avoid crossing them, I decided to turn away from the Cape of St. Vincent.

The strong wind pushed us away from the coast for 45 days until we circled the Canary Islands, which are places unknown and even feared by modern sailors.
