Candia (Crete)

On April 25, 1431, Pietro Querini and his crew set sail from the port of Candia the present Heraklion to reach Flanders to trade valuable goods.

From Pietro Querini’s diary (P.Nelli, 2007): on April 25 I left Candia to embark on that journey that would prove bitter and full of misfortunes. My state of mind was, as anyone can imagine, sad for the loss of my son, and full of grief, almost as if it were a premonition of the many and unbearablemisfortunes that were to come.
