“We arrived in Trondheim, and the next day, a Friday, the Ascension Day of our Lord, we were escorted into the city to a very magnificent church dedicated to St. Olaf, where the rector and all the inhabitants were assembled for mass.”
The cathedral was built between 1070 and 1300, and is Norway’s most central church. The constitution of 1814 stipulated that it should be the coronation church for Norway’s regent.
It is the burial church of Olav the Saint. Nidaros Cathedral is Norway’s original archbishop’s church and one of the Nordic countries’ largest medieval churches.
On Pietro Querini’s return journey back from Røst to Italy with boat, they were loaded with dried fish. They had a stop in Trondheim on the trip, where they had the dried fish blessed in the Nidaros Cathedral.

Os eventos acontecem em palcos espalhados pela cidade; entre outros, a Catedral de Nidaros, a igreja de Vår Frue e Byscenen, bem como em palcos ao ar livre em Borggården em Erkebispegården e na fortaleza de Kristiansten.
Ao longo de cinco dias, o festival realiza uma série de concertos de todos os gêneros, desde pop e rock até música clássica e música sacra tradicional.
Além disso, o encontro da Frente Oeste e outros programas de palestras na intersecção entre fé e sociedade são uma parte importante do festival, assim como um rico programa de serviços e atividades para peregrinos.
O Olavsfest também tem um grande mercado na área ao redor da Catedral de Nidaros, além de uma extensa programação familiar.
O festival também colabora com diversas instituições e organizações culturais locais e nacionais. A importância histórica das festas de Olav está ligada à importância de Olav, o Santo, para a Noruega ao longo dos últimos mil anos.
