Pilgrim trails carry stories of faith, movement, and encounters between people, traces of life and culture that cut across both time and space. How can we better harness the value embedded in these routes, and strengthen them through cooperation, joint positioning, and a clearer link to the wider European context?

 European Cultural Routes have existed since 1987, when the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela was designated as the first cultural route by the Council of Europe. Today, there are almost 50 thematic cultural routes in Europe, which in different ways communicate a transnational European cultural heritage. Together, we explore how pilgrimage routes can be developed as arenas for sustainable tourism, local development, and living cultural heritage.
